"Wilderness and Marginality of a Cuban intelectual in Pedro Juan Gutiérrez's novel Trilogía sucia de la Habana" (1998). Caribbean Studies. Vol 46. No. 2. July-December 2018.

Happy to see another article published, this time in the Caribbean Studies Journal, Vol. 46 No. 2, July-December 2018, by Instituto de Estudios del Caribe, Universidad de Puerto Rico.

This article is entitled "Wilderness and Marginality of a Cuban intelectual in Pedro Juan Gutiérrez's novel Trilogía sucia de la Habana (1998)", and is part of my PhD. Dissertation from 2016 at the University of Miami.

Click in the link bellow to access the text:

Abstract
The article explores how the novel Trilogía sucia de la Habana (1998), by Pedro Juan Gutiérrez, depicts the decline of the subject identity heavily constructed by the paternalist ideology, promises and morals of the Cuban nation-state during the revolutionary period. Instead, emptiness, loss of faith, despair and wild survival became distressing effects of the nineties crisis. Pedro Juan’s marginal existence, constrained agency and sense of lost time embodies a common place for many Cuban intellectuals, trapped in the absurdity of a chaotic national situation. With Trilogía, Gutiérrez re-imagines the Cuban nation at the turn of the century as a dystopian place of material decadence, dehumanization, revival of colonial stereotypes and a rough culture of daily survival by all means. In those circumstances, the present is the only time that really counts and the hypersexualizing of the body became the privilege space for individual agency. The novel moves the spotlight from the collective incarnation of the “New Man” in the official revolutionary propaganda, to the voice of forgotten individuals massively converted into marginal beings. This article dialogues with texts by scholars Odette Casamayor, Guillermina de Ferrari, José Quiroga y Esther Whitfield, and with theories by Pierre Bourdieu, Roberto Bolaño, Frantz Fanon and Stuart Hall.

Keywords: Pedro Juan Gutiérrez, Cuban narrative, post-socialist intellectual, decadence, marginality

Review: Alain Perez releases a new album: ADN (2017)

My first impressions about ADN (2017) EGREM,
new album by Alain Pérez.

Photo: Franco Oriot

by: Eva Silot Bravo, PhD. esilot@gmail.com. All Rights Reserved.

At first, ADN might seem like an album primarily for musicians. But it's more than that. It's an album for dancers, art lovers, anyone sensitive to discover details, elegance and color through music. Musicians like Ruben Blades, Omara Portuondo, El Micha and Osain del Monte band collaborate in this album, which has been nominated to the 2017 Latin Grammy Awards under the Best Salsa Album category.

The album is finely crafted in many ways: the arrangements, the brass phrasings, the upbeat percussion constantly inviting to dance, the rumba rhythm always in the background, the "back and forth" between salsa and timba, the mysterious bridges, the subtle colors, the engulfing tunes of the bass, the open and melodic voice and the multiple references to music genres like mambo, guaracha, danzonete, Afrocuban jazz and bands like Irakere, Isaac Delgado and Earth Wind and Fire.

Listening to Alain Perez music feels like accessing a living archive of infinite rhythms and sounds. His compositions provide an intelligent summary of the historiography of Cuban popular music, further enriched by his experiences traveling around the world. His music is also the result of Alain's involvement with the flamenco scene in Spain and his regular visits to Cuba. His poetry delivers diverse, fun, and plausible stories. Perez sings about universal love, the love that needs no excuses to exist. His music celebrates life as an adventure, both underground and subtle, profound and entertaining, scholarly and sensual. ADN demands repeated listenings, and ultimately makes one smile.
